Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu inaugurated new flight routes from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, operated by IndiGo. This marks IndiGo as the second airline to establish operations at Hindon Airport, following Air India Express, which began services four months prior.
Hindon Airport, located in the National Capital Region, will now offer connections to nine Indian cities through IndiGo services. These cities include Bengaluru, Kolkata, Varanasi, Goa, Patna, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Indore. The minister emphasized the significance of this development, highlighting it as a success for Hindon, Ghaziabad, western Uttar Pradesh, and the entire nation, representing the ambitions of common Indians.
The minister noted the substantial growth of India's civil aviation sector, with airlines, airports, terminal capacity, and passenger numbers doubling over the past decade. He predicted further growth in tier II and III cities between 2024 and 2034, with Hindon serving as a model for unlocking this potential. Passengers in the National Capital Region will now be served by both Indira Gandhi International Airport and Hindon Airport.
The development of Hindon Airport was undertaken in 2019 under the UDAN scheme, with a budget of Rs 50 crore, in collaboration with the Indian Air Force. The minister highlighted the increase in annual flyers from Hindon Airport, rising from approximately 8,000 in 2019 to over 80,000 currently.
The Union Budget 2025-26 further supports the growth of the domestic civil aviation sector. A modified UDAN scheme will be launched to enhance regional connectivity, aiming to connect 120 new destinations and transport 4 crore passengers over the next decade. The UDAN scheme, initiated in April 2017, focuses on improving air routes in underserved regions. The government aims to establish India as a global aviation hub by 2030.
