Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the head of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), has been appointed as the new chairman of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA). He had been serving in an acting capacity since November. The appointment was made official through a unanimous vote by all 23 member boards during the ACA's annual general meeting held in Singapore on Friday.
In a statement released by ZC, Mukuhlani expressed his vision for African cricket. He emphasized the importance of stronger governance, expanded opportunities, and renewed ambition for the sport's development. He also called for continued progress, unity, and a shared passion for the game.
The ACA, which includes two ICC Full Members, South Africa and Zimbabwe, has recently completed a significant administrative overhaul. This involved adopting a new memorandum of incorporation to improve governance. The organization's future plans include launching a long-awaited Africa T20 league, reviving the Afro Asia Cup, and ensuring cricket's inclusion in the 2027 Africa Games in Egypt.
Mukuhlani highlighted the significance of these initiatives for increasing visibility, attracting investment, securing policy support, and fostering continental collaboration. He has been at the helm of ZC since 2015, successfully winning three re-elections. He is also a member of the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee. During his tenure, ZC has overcome financial challenges, recovered from a temporary ICC suspension, and secured a place for the women's team in the Future Tours Programme.
While the men's team has faced setbacks, including missing recent World Cups, there are positive developments on the horizon. Zimbabwe will co-host the 2027 50-over World Cup with South Africa and Namibia. They will also partner with Namibia for the 2026 Under 19 World Cup.

This feels like more of the same recycled management. We need fresh ideas and true leadership, not just familiarity.

Tavengwa should focus on fixing cricket back home before taking on a bigger role. It feels like he’s overreaching.

Instead of relying on an unproven leader, the ACA should consider appointing someone with a successful track record elsewhere.
