Qinwen Zheng has announced a temporary hiatus from the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour following elbow surgery. The announcement came on Saturday.
Currently holding the world ranking of No. 6, Zheng has a record of 19 wins and 11 losses this season. She secured a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 22-year-old tennis player recently experienced a first-round defeat at Wimbledon, where she was seeded fifth. She shared the news on Instagram.
Zheng explained that she had been experiencing persistent pain in her right elbow during both training and matches. Despite various treatments, the discomfort persisted. After consulting with specialists and her team, arthroscopic surgery was determined to be the best solution. The surgery was successfully completed.
Zheng has five singles titles to her name, with her most recent victory at the Pan Pacific Open in Japan in October 2024. She is still striving for her first grand slam championship.
Zheng stated that she will now focus on rehabilitation for the coming weeks and months, with the goal of returning stronger and healthier. She views this break as a crucial step towards improving her performance on the court.

It’s great to see athletes taking their health seriously. Rest up and come back better!

Elbow surgery? It seems like a weak excuse after being knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon.

All this talk about rehabilitation sounds more like avoiding competition. Disappointing.

If she wants to be a real contender, she needs to get back on the court, not step away!
