In a significant milestone for the sport of Kho Kho, Singapore witnessed its debut on July 20, as an exhibition match took place between the Kho Kho Association of Singapore and the Kho Kho Association of Malaysia. This marked the first time a national team from Singapore faced off against Malaysia, which recently participated in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in India.
The full-day event was organized by the Asian Kho Kho Federation in partnership with the Kho Kho Association of Singapore at Jurong West Secondary School. It aimed to introduce Kho Kho to a wider audience in Singapore, featuring a combination of training sessions, theory presentations, and exciting exhibition matches to spark interest in the sport among participants and attendees.
Sudhanshu Mittal, the President of the International Kho Kho Federation, expressed his excitement for the occasion, highlighting it as a pivotal moment for Kho Kho in Singapore. He emphasized the establishment of the Asian Kho Kho Federation and its role in expanding the sport's influence not only in Southeast Asia but throughout Asia. Mittal noted that Kho Kho is unique in how it demands agility, speed, reflexes, and stamina, and he celebrated the commitment shown by those involved in promoting its growth.
A clinical training session conducted by officials from the Malaysian association attracted around 180 young participants from various regions of Singapore. Following the skills clinic, attendees engaged in theoretical discussions and practical workshops that covered the fundamental aspects of Kho Kho, allowing them to hone their skills through friendly matches.
Aslam Sher Khan, President of the Asian Kho Kho Federation, remarked on the importance of the event in elevating Kho Kho on an international scale and fostering a unified vision to share the sport with new audiences. He highlighted the event's role in inspiring communities, developing young athletes, and establishing a robust foundation for future growth.
Kshitij Aggarwal, Co-Secretary of the Asian Kho Kho Federation, noted the enthusiasm that characterized the Kho Kho Day event, which drew participation from over 100 students. He expressed optimism for the sport's future in the region, highlighting the spirited performance of Singapore's newly formed team against their experienced Malaysian counterparts.
In the exhibition match, the teams from Singapore and Malaysia showcased their skills, with Singapore's national team proving competitive despite their recent formation. The spirited contest illustrated the potential for growth and development within the sport, as it continues its journey toward greater recognition on the global stage.
