The last rites for Fauja Singh, the renowned marathon runner, were conducted in Jalandhar, Punjab, on Sunday. This followed his passing in a road accident on July 14th.
Family, friends, and numerous admirers came together to honor the iconic athlete. He was affectionately known as the 'Sikh Superman' and the 'Turbaned Tornado' due to his extraordinary accomplishments in marathon running.
The accident occurred on Monday afternoon. While on his regular walk, Fauja Singh was struck by an unidentified white vehicle. He was a resident of Beas village, under the jurisdiction of the Adampur police station.
After the collision, he was immediately taken to Shriman Hospital. Sadly, he passed away during treatment later that evening.
His grandson, Harleen Singh, shared details of the tragic event. He explained that they initially believed his injuries were minor. However, they were later informed that he had not regained consciousness, which was a shock to everyone. Harleen also highlighted his grandfather's dedication to promoting sports, Sikhism, and an anti-drug campaign, as well as his charitable donations from his marathon earnings.
Fauja Singh, celebrated as the 'Sikh Superman,' amazed the world by breaking multiple records in various age categories as a marathon runner. He began his marathon journey at the London Marathon in 2000 at the age of 89. He went on to complete the London Marathon six more times and also participated in marathons in Toronto, New York, and other cities.
Fauja Singh's memory will endure as a symbol of perseverance and inspiration, motivating people worldwide.
