The last of four inmates who escaped an ICE detention center in New Jersey was apprehended by the FBI. Andres Felipe Pineda-Mogollon was arrested in Los Angeles following a traffic stop in the Silver Lake neighborhood. Homeland Security Investigations assisted in the arrest.
Department of Homeland Security officials expressed gratitude to law enforcement for capturing Pineda-Mogollon and the other escapees. They emphasized that the detention center housed dangerous criminals, including the four fugitives who had committed serious offenses.
Pineda-Mogollon, a Colombian national, had overstayed his tourist visa after entering the U.S. in 2023. He was one of four individuals described as "public safety threats" who broke out of Delaney Hall, a privately-run ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on the evening of June 12. The other three escapees, Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes, Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez, and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada, were captured prior to Pineda-Mogollon.
The escape occurred after a disturbance inside the building. According to an immigration attorney, around 50 detainees became agitated due to delayed meals and pushed down a dormitory wall, leading to a violent situation.
Pineda-Mogollon had prior arrests in New York City and Union, New Jersey, on charges including larceny, residential burglary, and possession of burglary tools. Bautista-Reyes, who entered the U.S. in 2021, was arrested for aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and weapons possession. Sandoval-Lopez, who entered the U.S. as a minor in 2019, was arrested for unlawful possession of a handgun and aggravated assault. Castaneda-Lozada, who entered the U.S. in 2022, was arrested on charges of burglary, theft, and conspiracy to commit burglary.

The language used paints a very negative picture, even though the individuals are not necessarily criminals in their home countries.

Hopefully, they will be tried and brought to justice soon. Law and order matters.

Sounds like another example of ICE's inhumane detention practices. Delayed meals causing a riot? Unacceptable conditions.

Overstaying a visa shouldn't be a crime punishable by detention and then being labeled a 'public safety threat.'

Why isn't the focus on the conditions at the detention center? This feels like a propaganda piece for ICE.
