Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina and co-chair of the Israel caucus, expressed strong disapproval of recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria. He described the actions as "suicidal" for Tel Aviv, stating he was "heartsick" about the situation. Wilson emphasized his long-standing support for Israel but voiced concern over the strikes' potential consequences.
Wilson believes the strikes, targeting Syria's military headquarters, are disrespectful to President Trump. He noted that Trump had recently lifted sanctions on Syria, hoping to foster economic growth after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Wilson also revealed he had a tense phone conversation with Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, urging him to convey his warning to Israel to cease the strikes.
The representative highlighted the potential damage to ongoing diplomatic efforts. He pointed out that back-channel talks between Israel and Syria regarding normalization had been underway, and the strikes have jeopardized these discussions. Furthermore, he warned that the actions could complicate efforts to broker a U.S.-led agreement, similar to the Abraham Accords, to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Wilson warned of the regional instability the strikes could cause. He believes the actions could undermine emerging ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, strain NATO relations with Turkey, fracture Druze unity in Jordan, and increase instability among Kurdish populations across several countries. He added that such fragmentation would create an opportunity for ISIS to resurge, potentially targeting Israel.
He also pointed to broader geopolitical implications, arguing that the strikes empower Iran and strengthen Russia's presence in Syria. Wilson asserted that Moscow uses its Syrian bases to project naval power across Africa and the Mediterranean. He believes the actions benefit Iran by creating instability, which allows Iran to destabilize other countries.
The last Israeli strike on Syria occurred recently, and a ceasefire has not been agreed upon. Israel's national security minister has called for the "elimination" of al-Sharaa. The Israeli Defense Minister stated the strikes were to defend Druze minority communities in Syria, fearing the Syrian leadership would soon target Israelis.
Wilson believes Israel is misdirecting its focus. He stated that the true enemy is Iran, not Syria. He warned that the strikes are opening the door for Iran to rebuild groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, potentially leading to significant loss of life within Israel.
Syria's leader has accused Israel of creating division by striking in defense of the Druze. Washington is also increasing pressure for de-escalation. The Trump administration has formally urged Israel to halt its strikes and pursue direct talks with Damascus.

Wasn't it just last week everyone was saying Israel should act against Iranian threats? Make up your mind!

Thank you, Joe Wilson, for expressing concern for Israel’s long-term stability. Diplomacy is crucial!

Joe Wilson's concerns are misplaced; Israel has the right to defend itself against all threats, including Syria's military.

Focusing on diplomacy while ignoring constant threats is a surefire way to invite disaster. Israel knows what it’s doing.

Glad to see a representative thinking strategically about the long-term impacts of military engagement.
