Singaporean military and defense units are currently responding to a cyberattack targeting the nation's critical infrastructure. The attack is believed to be the work of a threat actor with alleged links to China. This information was disclosed by Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing on Saturday.
These specialized units are collaborating with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) in a coordinated government effort to manage the incident. The attack was initially revealed by Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam on Friday, who described the group behind the attack, UNC3886, as "highly sophisticated" and a serious threat to Singapore's national security.
UNC3886 has been identified by cybersecurity firm Mandiant as a China-linked espionage group known for targeting strategic organizations worldwide. Minister Chan was one of several Cabinet ministers who addressed the attack on Saturday.
Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the ongoing cyber threats. She noted the delicate balance between operational security and informing the public, particularly during active operations. She highlighted the potentially devastating consequences of a successful attack on critical infrastructure, such as water, power, or telecommunications networks.
