Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim addressed recent claims of government interference in judicial appointments following the selection of a new Chief Justice. He stated that the appointment effectively refuted any allegations of his involvement, including speculation surrounding potential candidates.
Anwar acknowledged the rumors, which included the suggestion of former attorney general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh for the position. He dismissed these speculations as unfounded, attributing them to unnamed lawyers whom he accused of engaging in political maneuvering. He emphasized that the criticisms and accusations leveled against him were ultimately proven inaccurate.
The Prime Minister clarified that the former attorney general, despite his distinguished service and current role as a Federal Court judge, was never considered for the role due to his remaining years of service. Anwar asserted that he neither proposed the former attorney general's name nor was it discussed by the Conference of Rulers.
Anwar had faced increasing public scrutiny over allegations of government interference in judicial appointments and disagreements with members of the Judicial Appointment Commission (JAC). There was widespread speculation among legal professionals regarding the Conference of Rulers' role in the selection process.
Anwar expressed his hope that the matter would be resolved, reiterating that he had never interfered in the judicial process or exercised any authority to remove judges.

I think it's commendable that Anwar is addressing this publicly. It shows he takes these rumors seriously.

Isn't it ironic that a PM denying judicial interference is under such scrutiny? Something feels off.

Political maneuvering is the norm in Malaysia. How can we believe him when it involves key positions like Chief Justice?

Anwar's assurances feel empty. The judiciary should be completely separate from politics!

Hiding behind 'unfounded rumors' doesn’t make him look trustworthy or transparent.
