Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faced indictment on Saturday, July 19th, on charges of abuse of power. The charges stemmed from his declaration of martial law the previous year. This action triggered a political crisis within South Korea, as it was seen as an attempt to undermine civilian rule.
The former president's actions included deploying troops to parliament in an effort to prevent lawmakers from voting against his declaration. This led to his arrest in January, making him the first sitting president in the country to be taken into custody. He had initially resisted arrest for several weeks, utilizing his presidential security detail to impede investigators.
Despite being released on procedural grounds in March, while his trial on insurrection charges continued, he was detained again last week. This second detention followed the issuance of an arrest warrant, prompted by concerns that he might destroy evidence related to the case.
The prosecution announced the indictment, detailing charges that included abuse of power and obstruction of special official duties. Prosecutor Park Ji-young also stated that Yoon failed to adhere to the proper procedures for declaring martial law, specifically by neglecting to hold a meeting with all cabinet members. Furthermore, Yoon was charged with creating and then discarding a false document that falsely claimed the prime minister and defense minister had approved the martial law declaration.

The fact that he was re-detained for obstruction of justice is not surprising.
