D.C. United announced on Wednesday the appointment of Rene Weiler as their new head coach, just six days after the dismissal of Troy Lesesne.
Weiler, aged 51, brings a wealth of experience, having managed clubs across various countries since 2009. His coaching journey has included stints in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, and Japan.
His most recent achievement was leading Swiss Super League side Servette FC to victory in the Swiss Cup in 2024. He also served as the club's sporting director, a role he assumed in June 2024.
Ally Mackay, D.C. United's general manager and chief soccer officer, highlighted Weiler's tactical acumen and ability to instill a structured playing style. Mackay emphasized Weiler's focus on building organized and aggressive teams, a style that aligns with the club's goals. He also expressed confidence in Weiler's ability to develop talent and set high standards.
Weiler's coaching career includes six title wins, notably the 2016-17 Belgian Pro League with Anderlecht and the 2019-20 Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly.
Weiler expressed his enthusiasm for the project at D.C. United, citing the club's history and passionate fanbase. He conveyed his belief in the foundation already in place and his confidence in the team's potential. He is eager to lead the team towards championship contention.
Currently positioned 13th in the Eastern Conference, D.C. United faces the possibility of missing the MLS Cup Playoffs for a sixth consecutive season.
Prior to his dismissal on July 10, Lesesne's record across all competitions stood at 18-26-17. Kevin Flanagan, the academy director, temporarily filled the coaching position.

Fans deserve better than another 'managerial journey' from someone who hasn't proven himself here.

He may have won titles elsewhere, but the MLS is a different beast. This could end in disaster.

We need a coach who can bring structure and discipline. I think Weiler fits that bill perfectly.
