China's first domestically developed 9-valent HPV vaccine is now available, priced at 499 yuan per dose. This provides a new option for individuals seeking HPV vaccination.
The vaccine is the result of 18 years of research and development. Clinical trial data demonstrates its effectiveness, with results comparable to imported vaccines. A study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases in July 2023 confirmed similar immune responses and safety profiles between the domestic and imported versions.
The primary goal of HPV vaccination is to prevent persistent HPV infection, which is a key factor in the development of cervical cancer. Phase III clinical trials showed that the domestic 9-valent HPV vaccine effectively protects against cervical cancer caused by the high-risk HPV types covered by the vaccine.
In line with global efforts to eliminate cervical cancer, China has also established its own plan for 2023-2030, with HPV vaccination promotion as a key objective.
Currently, a significant portion of the female population in China, estimated at 70 to 80 percent of the 300 million women aged 9 to 45, remain unvaccinated against HPV.
The domestic vaccine is approved for a two-dose regimen for youths aged 9 to 17. This may improve vaccination compliance, increase coverage rates, and facilitate the timely establishment of immune protection.
