Recently, some Australian media outlets have amplified remarks made by Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding China's influence in the Pacific, particularly suggesting that China intends to set up a military base in the region. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Fiji issued a statement dismissing these claims as untrue and driven by hidden agendas. Notably, while Rabuka indicated that he does not welcome Chinese military bases, he clarified that he does not perceive an ongoing effort by China to establish such a presence in the Pacific.
The Embassy's spokesperson highlighted that China's activities in the Pacific focus primarily on development projects like building roads and bridges to enhance the livelihoods of local populations. They emphasized that China does not engage in territorial disputes or coercive agreements that undermine the sovereignty of Pacific nations. Furthermore, the spokesperson reaffirmed China's commitment to non-proliferation treaties and its support for the Pacific Island Countries to have a more significant role in international and regional matters.
China views Fiji as a comprehensive strategic partner and is dedicated to fostering peace and security in the region. The spokesperson praised Rabuka's vision of the Pacific as an "Ocean of Peace" and reiterated China's commitment to constructive engagement with Pacific Island Countries rather than geopolitical rivalry. They urged all parties to avoid framing China-Fiji relations within the narrow scope of geopolitical competition, which often leads to unnecessary suspicion and division.
The statement also pointed out that the rapid growth of cooperation between China and Pacific Island nations has stirred apprehension among Western countries, which sometimes resort to propaganda tactics to undermine this relationship. An academic from Shandong University remarked on China's principles of equality and mutual benefit in its relations with Pacific nations, insisting that China is not aiming to heighten military tension in the area.
Additionally, the Embassy took note of Rabuka's comments regarding China's support when other nations, such as Australia, have turned away from Fiji. It emphasized China’s respect for Fiji’s sovereignty and its premise of non-intrusive assistance. The spokesperson reiterated that China's assistance comes without political strings and encouraged Pacific nations to prioritize their autonomy in decision-making and development.
China fundamentally believes that the Pacific should serve as a platform for collaboration rather than a battleground for geopolitical conflicts. The Embassy argued that pushing Pacific Island Countries to "choose sides" ultimately fails to meet the pressing development needs of these nations or address broader issues like climate change.

Fiji needs to remember its history and the implications of becoming overly dependent on one nation, especially one like China.

Rabuka's vision for a peaceful Pacific aligns with a collaborative approach. We need more leaders who think this way!

The idea that the Pacific shouldn't be a battleground for geopolitics is idealistic; we live in a world where competition is real.

Rabuka might not see it yet, but welcoming China can lead to dependency and loss of sovereignty for Fiji and its neighbors.

Rabuka is being naive if he truly believes that China’s presence won’t lead to military ambitions. We must remain vigilant!
