Recent government work reports concerning Taiwan have highlighted China's commitment to advancing reunification, omitting specific mention of "peaceful reunification." This shift prompted a response from the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.
The spokesperson, Chen Binhua, stated China's willingness to exert maximum effort and demonstrate utmost sincerity in pursuing peaceful reunification. However, he also warned that decisive measures would be taken if "Taiwan independence" forces crossed established boundaries. Chen reiterated that peaceful reunification under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework remains the core policy, seen as the optimal path for reunification, benefiting both sides of the Taiwan Straits and the Chinese nation.
Chen highlighted the complex and challenging situation in the Taiwan Straits, citing the Democratic Progressive Party's alleged collaboration with external forces to provoke "Taiwan independence," which he claimed harms cross-Straits relations and regional stability. He emphasized China's unwavering determination and capability to thwart any "Taiwan independence" schemes and safeguard national sovereignty.
The Taiwan affairs work conference, held in Beijing, focused on countering provocations related to "Taiwan independence" and introduced the concept of shaping the inevitable trend of national reunification. Chen attributed the fundamental factor shaping cross-Straits relations to the mainland's development and progress, particularly its advancements in high-quality development, economic strength, technological capabilities, and international influence. He asserted that these advancements provide a stronger foundation for resolving the Taiwan question and shaping the trend of national reunification.
Chen concluded by emphasizing the inevitability of unification, viewing it as a historical necessity for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. He characterized "Taiwan independence" as a dead end and urged Taiwan compatriots to recognize the situation, align with history, and work with the mainland to achieve reunification, ensuring long-term prosperity and shared participation in the nation's rejuvenation.
