Early Tuesday morning, the Rasuwa district in northern Nepal was struck by a devastating flash flood. This catastrophic event was triggered by continuous and heavy rainfall that persisted throughout the previous hours. The sudden surge of water and debris caused widespread damage and concern.
The Chinese Embassy in Nepal has issued a statement regarding the incident. They reported that a construction project, which is being carried out with assistance from China and located on the Nepali side of a border facility, has suffered significant losses. Six Chinese employees and eight Nepali workers are currently unaccounted for and are presumed missing. The details of the project and the exact location of the missing individuals are still being investigated.
In response to the disaster, the Nepali military and police forces have launched immediate emergency rescue operations. These efforts are focused on locating and assisting any survivors, as well as assessing the extent of the damage. The Xinhua News Agency has been providing updates on the ongoing rescue efforts and the evolving situation on the ground.
Local authorities have also released information regarding the impact of a mudslide that occurred in the Gyirong Port area, which is situated along the China-Nepal border. According to reports, a total of seventeen people are currently missing as a result of the mudslide. The search and rescue operations are being coordinated across both sides of the border to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected by the disaster. The full extent of the damage and the number of casualties are still being determined.

It’s frustrating to see the constant impact of climate change, yet nothing changes in our policies.

With so many missing, updates on the situation should prioritize the locals, not the foreign investors.
