Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, held a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya in Kuala Lumpur on July 10, 2025. Wang emphasized the significance of the relationship between China and Japan, extending beyond the bilateral context due to their status as important neighbors.
Wang highlighted the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War as a crucial moment to reflect on history and chart a course for the future. He expressed the hope that Japan would learn from history and remain committed to peaceful development. He believed that such an approach would provide stability and momentum for development in the region and globally.
Wang stated that China's policy towards Japan has consistently been stable, and he hoped Japan would develop an objective understanding of China and maintain a positive and rational policy. He also addressed the Taiwan question, emphasizing the importance of Japan adhering to the stipulations outlined in the four political documents between the two countries, thereby safeguarding the foundation of their relationship.
Iwaya acknowledged recent positive developments in Japan-China relations, indicating a return to a more appropriate state. He stressed the need for increased communication, the reduction of differences, and the expansion of cooperation to foster the stable development of a mutually beneficial strategic relationship. Regarding Taiwan, Iwaya reiterated Japan's adherence to the position established in the 1972 joint statement.
Iwaya also acknowledged the significance of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, stating Japan's commitment to addressing history, looking towards the future, and continuing on the path of peaceful development. He expressed Japan's desire to collaborate with China to strengthen exchanges at all levels and promote cooperation across various sectors.
