Democratic lawmakers condemned Florida's new Everglades immigration detention center after a visit, citing overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and insect infestations. Republicans on the same tour saw no such issues at the remote facility, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."
The state-arranged tour followed blocked access for some Democrats. Lawmakers were split into groups. Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz described "disturbing" conditions and abuse. Cage-style units housed 32 men with limited facilities, and insects were present.
While unable to speak with detainees, one reportedly shouted, "I'm an American citizen!" Republican Blaise Ingoglia saw a well-run facility. Another Republican, Jay Collins, found it clean and functioning well.
Journalists were excluded, and phones/cameras were prohibited.
Federal Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said any issues had been addressed. DeSantis and Republicans tout the facility as an efficient response to calls for mass deportations.
Described as temporary, it aims to increase migrant detention capacity. The remote location is meant to deter illegal immigration.
Detainees and advocates report poor conditions. A state spokesperson called these descriptions "completely false."
Lawmakers have sued over denied access.

We need to send a message. The location is great to deter people.

The fact that detainees couldn't speak with the lawmakers is another red flag. What are they covering up?

It's a temporary facility, doing what's needed. It needs to be efficient!

This is appalling. "Alligator Alcatraz"? Seriously? They're treating people like criminals, regardless of their immigration status.

The Democrats are just stirring up the pot to get attention.

It's a necessary answer to the mass deportations that we need to perform.
