In 2020, when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their intention to reduce their royal roles, they reportedly envisioned a compromise. They desired to relocate to the United States, which they did, while still performing some royal duties. Simultaneously, they sought financial independence.
However, this compromise was likely never viable for Harry, now 40, and Meghan, 43. A similar situation involving royals balancing royal duties with personal ventures had previously ended poorly. Prince Edward, the King's brother, had a production company, Ardent, alongside his royal responsibilities.
This arrangement created issues for the monarchy. Edward's company violated an agreement the Palace had with the press, which was to leave Prince William undisturbed during his university studies in Scotland in 2001. Edward's company filmed footage near William's university for an American TV series, angering the King. This incident led to Edward's departure from the company in 2002.
According to royal author Katie Nicholl, this situation demonstrated to Charles that royals could not successfully combine royal duties with independent careers, which was the initial aim of Harry and Meghan. The late Queen Elizabeth was also reportedly hesitant about the idea of a royal carrying out duties while pursuing personal interests. Her lack of support for the "half-in, half-out" approach ultimately led to Harry and Meghan's complete departure from their roles as senior royals.

I agree; the monarchy has a duty to uphold certain standards. Harry and Meghan should’ve known better!

The royal family’s reaction shows how out of touch they are with modern values and perspectives.

It's necessary to respect the traditions of the monarchy. Harry and Meghan weren’t able to do that.

The royals need to be careful about blending business with royal duties. It’s a slippery slope.
