Peter Mandelson, a prominent figure who previously supported remaining in the European Union, has acknowledged that the UK's trade agreement with the United States was only achievable due to Brexit. Mandelson, a former EU commissioner and a key member of the official Remain campaign in 2016, now serves as Britain's Ambassador to the US. He highlighted that British car manufacturers are currently exporting vehicles to America because of the trade deal negotiated with US President Donald Trump, a deal made possible by the UK's departure from the EU.
Mandelson stated that the trade deal offered some positives, even though the UK lost other advantages by leaving the EU. He specifically mentioned that British-made cars, such as Aston Martins produced in Warwickshire, now possess a competitive edge over vehicles manufactured within the EU. Speaking to The Times, Mandelson expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the 17.5% competitive advantage these British products now have over competitors like Mercedes and Ferraris.
The trade agreement with the Trump administration resulted in a reduction of global tariffs on cars from 27.5% to 10% for British-made vehicles. Tariffs on aerospace products were eliminated entirely. However, a 25% tariff on UK steel and aluminum exports to the US remains, despite plans to remove it. Mandelson, who previously held Cabinet positions in Labour governments under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, praised Donald Trump, describing him as a unique and historically significant president. He noted Trump's quick grasp of issues and ability to identify core points.
Furthermore, the UK's ambassador to the US indicated that Donald Trump should anticipate a "warm reception" during his upcoming second state visit to Britain later this year. Reports suggest the visit will occur during the political party conference season, when Parliament is not in session. Mandelson commented that Trump genuinely admires Britain and trusts Keir Starmer. He also confirmed reports that the visit would take place when Parliament is not sitting, responding to concerns about potential opposition from Labour MPs.

Peter Mandelson's support for Trump is shocking and undermines any credibility he had as a Remain supporter. Disappointing!

Mandelson's comments reflect a lack of understanding of the broader economic implications of Brexit. It’s not worth the cost!
