Severe flooding and widespread disruption have occurred in several areas of Zaragoza province, Spain, following intense storms that impacted the region. The extreme weather brought heavy rainfall, leading to significant challenges for residents and authorities.
Summer camps were particularly affected, with over 300 schoolchildren needing to be evacuated. In Nela, two camps housing a total of 186 children and staff were relocated to a sports center. Another 140 children in Loma de Montija were also moved to safety due to the rising floodwaters. The historic center of Tarazona experienced severe flooding as well, with streets quickly transforming into raging torrents.
The impact of the storms was widespread, with streets flooded, cars swept away, and numerous flood-related incidents reported. Municipal crews responded to over 30 incidents, including fallen trees and blocked roads. The A-68 motorway was closed due to flash flooding in Grisén. Local authorities activated emergency protocols and deployed the military to assist with the emergency.
The storms also caused power outages, leaving over 600 people without electricity in Pradilla and Boquiñeni. Hail and strong winds were reported in several areas, further intensifying the impact across the broader Aragón region. The government issued alerts for potential further storms, localized hail, and flash flooding in Aragón and Catalonia. The severe weather followed an intense heatwave that had previously affected the area.
