The British government has issued a warning to its citizens traveling to Thailand regarding specific items and activities that could lead to legal consequences. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) recently updated its travel guidance to highlight potential risks associated with playing cards and drones.
Specifically, the FCDO cautions that carrying more than 120 playing cards in Thailand could result in a fine or imprisonment. This warning is rooted in Thailand's strict laws on gambling, where most forms of gambling are prohibited. Only state-controlled horse racing, the lottery, and betting on certain sports are permitted.
Furthermore, the FCDO emphasizes the importance of adhering to drone regulations. Improper drone usage in Thailand can lead to severe penalties, including up to five years in prison. All drones must be registered with Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) within 30 days of entering the country or purchasing a drone there, regardless of intended use.
This updated guidance follows an incident in January where British tourists were among those arrested at an illegal gambling den in Pattaya, Thailand. The FCDO also reminds travelers that Thailand has other strict laws, including those regarding public smoking and the use of e-cigarettes. Additionally, posting certain images online, such as those depicting alcohol consumption or inappropriate attire, can be illegal.

I think the warnings do more harm than good; they make tourists paranoid.

I appreciate the heads-up! It's better to be informed than face unexpected legal issues.

Tourists must know they aren’t above the law, and these advisories help clarify that.

If tourists can’t carry playing cards, why not just ban all games? Where does this madness end?

What will they target next? How about banning laughter? This is absurd!
