The Gentle Legacy of Coal Taurozzi, Parliament Hill's Feline Icon

Coal Taurozzi was not just admired for his stylish blue tie during public appearances; his character truly defined him as a gentleman feline. Rescued as a kitten and raised in a cat colony on Parliament Hill, he never displayed hunter instincts, avoiding any bird or mouse, and even maintained a respectful relationship with the raccoons that visited during mealtimes.

Following the closure of the cat colony in 2013, Coal found a new home with public servant Danny Taurozzi, where he gracefully navigated life alongside his diva sister, Valerie. Their bond deepened, especially when Valerie fell ill, with Coal protectively sleeping beside her. In addition to his familial duties, Coal dedicated time to volunteering at a local long-term care facility, offering solace to veteran residents with his impeccably groomed fur.

On Tuesday, Coal passed away peacefully at the age of 17, resting comfortably on a sofa with Mr. Taurozzi and his cat brother, Winston, by his side. His death was publicly acknowledged by Nico, the country's leading feline companion of Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Despite his unconventional and unsuccessful campaign for prime minister in 2015—where he advocated for animal welfare—Coal’s charisma made him a beloved figure. Mr. Taurozzi facilitated his rise to fame, ensuring Coal was featured prominently in media appearances and on a busy Facebook page that attracted thousands of followers worldwide.

Coal's endearing presence also included a penchant for photography, as he was often seen charming tourists in his colony. While he might not have fulfilled Parliament Hill cats' traditional role to manage a rodent problem, Coal's unique approach and friendly demeanor endeared him to many.

As the last living cat from Parliament Hill, Coal’s life journey included adapting to a new indoor existence at Mr. Taurozzi's home, where he relished birdwatching and enjoyed outings around the city. His health issues toward the end of his life were met with love and exceptional care, demonstrating a reciprocal generosity between him and the people who adored him.

Ultimately, Coal's battle with aggressive cancer led to a peaceful passing on July 8, after being lovingly cared for throughout his life. Mr. Taurozzi reflected on Coal's impact, stating he was a symbol of Canadian compassion, whose gentle disposition touched numerous hearts. Coal will be remembered fondly and never forgotten.

Why are we romanticizing the life of a cat? Animals are not political figures.

Coal was more than a pet; he was a friend and a companion. This tribute is so fitting.

Isn't it a little silly to celebrate a cat's life as if it were extraordinary?

I don’t get why people are so invested in this. It’s just an animal.
