Canadian Sentiment Towards Americans Cools Slightly Amidst Trade Tensions

A recent poll reveals that over 70% of Canadians still express negative emotions, such as anger, when describing their feelings towards Americans. However, the intensity of these negative feelings has lessened, even as a challenging trade dispute between the two countries continues.

The survey indicates a slight increase in the number of Canadians reporting disinterest or even optimism as their dominant emotion. The poll, conducted in early July, found that a majority of respondents still leaned towards pessimism or anger when considering their views of Americans.

Compared to a previous poll conducted in March, when trade tensions were escalating, the July results show a decline in negative sentiment. The percentage of respondents selecting pessimism decreased, as did those choosing anger.

Conversely, the proportion of Canadians expressing disinterest and optimism increased. The pollster noted that while negative feelings persist among a majority, the intensity has decreased, leading to a rise in other emotions.

The poll, which surveyed over a thousand adult Canadians, was conducted over several days in early July. The results are considered statistically accurate within a certain margin of error.

Other emotions, such as satisfaction and happiness, were selected by a small percentage of respondents. A small percentage also indicated they were unsure of their feelings.

The distribution of these feelings varies across the country. Anger was more prevalent in Quebec, while pessimism was highest among older Canadians.

The pollster suggested that the feelings surrounding the relationship between the two countries are sensitive, with current events having a less intense impact than earlier in the year.
