China's Dominance

A Historic Display of China's Naval Prowess and Strengthening Patriotic Ties

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region witnessed a significant display of national pride and naval strength with the arrival of China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, the CNS Shandong, accompanied by a formidable escort fleet. The fleet's entry was met with a ceremonial water salute and cheers from thousands of spectators, showcasing the nation's maritime strength and deepening patriotic sentiment among residents.

The massive carrier, along with three escort ships, approached Victoria Harbour, attracting enthusiastic crowds along the waterfront. The Shandong, standing tall and featuring a flight deck spanning the length of two soccer fields, displayed carrier-based aircraft and a formation of sailors spelling out Chinese characters. This visit marks Hong Kong as the only city in the world to have hosted two active Chinese carriers.

The visit of the Shandong also coincided with several significant anniversaries, including the anniversary of Hong Kong's return, the presence of the People's Liberation Army in the city, and the implementation of the Hong Kong SAR National Security Law. The timing was described as inspiring, reflecting the nation's rapid advancements in defense technology and maritime power. It also highlighted the nation's wartime resilience and current prosperity and stability.

The fleet's five-day visit followed celebrations of the anniversary of Hong Kong's return. Residents eagerly shared viewing tips on social media as the fleet passed through the scenic East Lamma Channel before docking. Free tour tickets were distributed, offering an immersive experience to learn about national defense and strengthen patriotic identity.

The Shandong, named after the East China province, ushered in China's "dual-carrier era." The escort fleet highlighted China's shipbuilding prowess. A deck reception was held, attended by community leaders. The fleet was described as a fully equipped, highly capable naval force. Naval officers were scheduled to engage in various activities, including sports matches and cultural exchanges with the Hong Kong Garrison and SAR government disciplinary forces.

Hundreds of students, educators, and local legislators gathered to welcome the fleet. The event was seen as a connection to community work, emphasizing the role of women in nurturing national identity through family values. The occasion served as a reminder of the motherland's expectations for Hong Kong, with the city in a better position to contribute to national development.

The Shandong's presence reinforced the importance of national security education. The visit created an emotional connection, strengthening patriotic sentiment and national identity. Students were deeply impressed, admiring the naval officers' discipline and underscoring the nation's military strength.

What about the voices that oppose the National Security Law? Celebrating strength ignores dissent.

Isn’t it ironic? We’ve ‘returned’ but feel more controlled than ever. Where’s the freedom in that?
