Lonzo Ball is entering a new chapter in his career. For the first time in a while, he won't be focused on recovering from a knee injury. Instead, he's preparing to integrate himself into a new team.
Ball was at the Cleveland Cavaliers' training facility, meeting with the medical staff and coaches. This followed his trade from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for forward Isaac Okoro. The trade agreement was reached in late June, but it became official at the start of the new league year.
Ball expressed excitement about the opportunity, highlighting the playing style of the team. He mentioned the presence of Donovan Mitchell, and the team's mobile big men, and the defensive versatility. He believes the team can execute various strategies on both offense and defense.
After missing two seasons due to a left knee injury, Ball played in 35 games last season, averaging 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He underwent a significant knee surgery in 2023. While he missed the end of the season due to a wrist injury, he was encouraged by his knee's performance throughout the year.
Ball, drafted second overall in 2017, has one year remaining on his contract with a team option for the following season. The Cavaliers needed a point guard after Ty Jerome's departure. Additionally, Darius Garland is expected to miss the start of the season due to a recent surgery.
The Cavaliers had a strong regular season record but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Ball is eager to participate in the playoffs, something he hasn't done in his career. He recognizes the team's championship aspirations and is focused on being available and performing well.
In other league news, several players have been involved in trades. Norman Powell is joining the Miami Heat, John Collins is headed to the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson are going to the Utah Jazz as part of a three-team deal.
Powell is expected to boost Miami's scoring and shooting. Collins averaged 19 points for the Jazz last season, while Love and Anderson contributed to their respective teams. Love, a veteran player, expressed his surprise at the trade.

I can’t believe the Bulls traded him. They got rid of a problem, and the Cavs are taking a huge risk.

Do the Cavs really think Lonzo can help them compete when he barely averaged anything last season?

Here’s hoping Lonzo finally makes it to the playoffs! He deserves that after everything he’s been through.
