Following intense rainfall in a village within Zhaotong, Yunnan Province, rescue efforts are currently in progress. The downpours have resulted in five individuals being reported missing and the destruction of two homes, according to China Central Television.
The Zhaotong area was subjected to heavy rainfall, including exceptionally intense localized downpours, from Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon. Weixin county in Zhaotong experienced a peak rainfall of 254.4 millimeters, establishing a new single-day record since the commencement of tracking in 1958.
Initial assessments indicate that the floods demolished two houses in Heilong village, Weixin county, and five people are still unaccounted for. Over 7,000 residents have been displaced due to the severe weather conditions.
The heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding and landslides throughout various areas of the region. Preliminary data indicates over 200 road collapses within Weixin county, with more than 40 sections rendered impassable and over 300 kilometers of roads damaged. The extreme weather also triggered more than 20 landslides and a dozen mudflows, leading to crop devastation and the loss of over 500 livestock.
