On Thursday, the National Health Commission in China announced the release of a second set of diagnosis and treatment guidelines that address 86 rare diseases. This new batch includes various conditions, notably achondroplasia, which affects bone growth and can lead to dwarfism, as well as acquired hemophilia and acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that can result in abnormal body part enlargement.
In China, it is estimated that approximately 20 million individuals suffer from rare diseases, with over 200,000 new cases emerging each year. The first set of guidelines was introduced back in 2019, encompassing 121 rare diseases. According to a statement from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, these updated guidelines were collaboratively developed by the hospital and the China Alliance for Rare Disease, following a request from the National Health Commission.
The new guidelines provide a thorough overview of various clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria, treatment methods, and long-term management plans for the 86 specified rare diseases. The hospital emphasized that these guidelines will serve as an essential resource for healthcare professionals, aiding in reducing diagnostic mistakes, enhancing patient care, and ultimately improving health outcomes for those affected.
