Singapore has initiated the Restaurant Industry Safety and Security Watch Group. This collaborative effort unites the police with members of the Restaurant Association of Singapore, aiming to bolster security and safeguard against criminal activities within the food and beverage industry.
Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Sim Ann addressed the initiative on Tuesday. She highlighted the importance of heightened awareness, referencing instances where restaurants in other nations have been targeted in attacks within populated areas.
Emphasizing Singapore's status as a significant culinary center and tourist destination, Sim Ann stressed the necessity for the city-state's thriving restaurant sector to remain vigilant against potential safety and security risks.
Furthermore, Sim encouraged the industry to take a proactive approach. This includes disseminating information regarding crimes and scams to both employees and patrons. She pointed out that Singapore recorded over 51,000 scam cases in 2024, with the food and beverage sector also being affected.
The newly formed industry watch group represents the tenth such entity established since 2008. Similar groups have been created for various sectors, including hospitality, manufacturing, chemicals, public entertainment, retail, finance, logistics, and point-to-point transportation.

It's the restaurants' responsibility to ensure security. Why is the government stepping in and dictating terms?

This feels like a marketing stunt. They are prioritizing the tourist business while neglecting the local ones.

If the government wants to help the restaurant industry, they should lower the taxes.

The fact they've done this in other sectors shows they understand how to take action and work with business to tackle crime.
