Following the first day of play in the third Test against England at Lord's, Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy commented on the injury to wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Reddy stated that the team would have more information about the severity of Pant's finger injury by the following morning.
Pant left the field for treatment after appearing to injure his finger while wicketkeeping. Dhruv Jurel took over the wicketkeeping duties. The injury occurred during the 34th over, when Pant dove to field a ball but was unable to cleanly catch it. He was visibly in pain and required medical attention.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later confirmed that Pant had been hit on his left index finger. The BCCI added that Pant was receiving treatment under the supervision of the medical team and that Jurel was keeping wickets in his absence.
Reddy mentioned during the post-day press conference that he was unaware of the specifics of Pant's injury, but that the team would receive an update before the next day's play.
A potential injury to Pant would be a significant setback for India. He is a key player, ranking as the second-highest run-scorer in the series with 342 runs in four innings, averaging 85.50, including two centuries and a fifty. He has also broken records as a wicketkeeper-batter.
Jurel has played four Tests, scoring 202 runs with an average of 40.40. He has yet to play in the current series.
At the end of the day's play, England was at 251/4, with Joe Root at 99 and Ben Stokes at 39 not out. England had a balanced first session, but largely dominated the following two sessions.
England started the final session at 153/2. Ravindra Jadeja broke a 109-run stand, with Jurel taking a catch. Ollie Pope was out for 44. Harry Brook was then dismissed for 11.
Stokes and Root played cautiously, reaching their 50-run mark in 100 balls. The pair ensured no further wickets fell, with Root ending the day on 99.
England won the toss and chose to bat first. The series is currently tied at 1-1.
