Singapore plans to significantly increase its teacher recruitment efforts. Education Minister Desmond Lee revealed that the nation will hire 1,000 new teachers each year for the coming years. This marks a substantial rise from the previous annual intake of approximately 700 teachers.
The announcement was made during the annual Teachers' Investiture Ceremony held at the National Institute of Education, located within Nanyang Technological University. Minister Lee emphasized the need for the education system to evolve and adapt to current trends.
He highlighted the impact of rapidly changing factors, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and social media, on how young people interact. The education system must go beyond simply keeping up with these developments.
Ministry data indicates a decrease in the number of teachers in Singapore. The teaching workforce shrank from 33,378 in 2016 to 30,396 in 2023, primarily due to a slowdown in recruitment.

An increase in teachers means more personalized attention for students. This could really enhance learning outcomes.

Are these new teachers just going to be thrown into classrooms without adequate preparation? That’s a recipe for disaster.

What about support for mental health in schools? More teachers without addressing the systemic pressures won't help.
