China Calls for Syrian Counter-Terrorism and Regional De-escalation

At a Security Council meeting concerning Syria, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, emphasized the importance of the Syrian interim authorities fulfilling their counter-terrorism obligations. He specifically urged them to take all necessary actions to combat terrorist organizations designated by the Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.

Fu highlighted the critical juncture Syria faces in achieving political stability and economic recovery. While acknowledging positive efforts towards internal reconciliation, he noted the complex and fragile nature of the current situation. He expressed hope that the Syrian interim authorities would effectively address the international community's concerns and, with international assistance, restore peace and stability, enabling the Syrian people to live with dignity.

Fu also stressed the significance of a national dialogue conference in promoting a broadly inclusive political transition. He urged the Syrian interim authorities to actively engage with diverse voices within the country, fostering dialogue, consultation, and internal unity to achieve genuine inclusiveness.

Expressing serious concern, Fu addressed the recent rise in violent terrorist incidents within Syria, which raised the risk of terrorist and extremist groups exploiting the instability. He also noted reports of foreign terrorist fighters being incorporated into Syrian government forces.

Furthermore, Fu called for increased efforts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in the region. He expressed China's deep concern over Israel's attacks on Iran, which have led to a sudden escalation of military conflict, and condemned Israel's violation of Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. He warned that further escalation of the conflict could severely impact Middle Eastern countries, including Syria. China is willing to maintain communication with all relevant parties and play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation.
