The city of Chengdu, located in Sichuan Province, has kicked off a volunteer service initiative in anticipation of the upcoming 12th World Games, marking exactly 30 days until the event's opening ceremony. Building on the success of the previous World University Games, Chengdu has established 532 urban volunteer service stations, which will be manned by approximately 10,000 volunteers. These volunteers are tasked with providing a diverse range of services to help domestic and international guests, athletes, residents, and tourists, offering city promotions, event information, and daily assistance.
During the launch ceremony, three volunteer representatives, affectionately known as "Little Green Peppers," highlighted their commitment to transforming the service stations into welcoming hubs that embody Chengdu's hospitality and dynamic spirit. One representative, Wan Siyi, a student from Sichuan Agricultural University, emphasized her training in language, etiquette, and emergency protocols to better assist visitors. She noted the importance of local cultural experiences, recommending popular sites such as the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage to international athletes.
Additionally, the organizers revealed details regarding the award ceremony, showcasing unique souvenirs designed for athletes who will win medals. The souvenirs, inspired by the traditional Sichuan Opera face-changing artistry, depict the Game mascots "Shu Bao," a panda, and "Jin Zai," a golden snub-nosed monkey, presented as figurines. Designed by Zhang Siwei, these collectibles aim to honor and bless the medalists while embodying strength and resilience. The medal boxes are intricately crafted from bamboo, reflecting the region's cultural heritage and were designed by Yang Qingyun to convey the warm sentiments of Chengdu's people.
As the event approaches, the organizers confirm readiness with all 27 competition venues completed and undergoing final inspections. The strategy adopted also includes utilizing existing facilities and establishing temporary sites, thereby minimizing costs. Notably, there will be no dedicated athlete village; instead, athletes will be accommodated in nearby hotels. Scheduled from August 7 to 17, this marks not only the first World Games held on the Chinese mainland but also signals another major international sports event in Sichuan following the World University Games earlier this year. The Games will showcase 34 sports across 60 disciplines, with a total of 256 medal events.

Souvenirs seem a bit... cheesy? Sichuan Opera face-changing artistry is cool, but are the figurines actually good quality?

Hotels sound impersonal compared to a village. Hoping the accommodations are good.

How accessible are the events for people with disabilities? Are there enough accommodations made?

Focusing on the games seems important - are there concerns for the environment and impact on the city?
