The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command initiated joint exercises around Taiwan island on Tuesday. This action followed a media inquiry regarding the current situation.
In response to the inquiry, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that both the Eastern Theater Command and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council had already issued statements concerning the joint exercises. Guo emphasized that these exercises served as a strong warning and deterrent against "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
Furthermore, Guo asserted that the exercises were a legitimate and necessary measure to protect China's sovereignty and maintain national unity. He reiterated that Taiwan is an integral part of China's territory and that the Taiwan question is strictly an internal matter, free from external interference.
The spokesperson also addressed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, stating that their persistent pursuit of a "Taiwan independence" stance and their reliance on external forces would ultimately prove unsuccessful. Guo concluded by emphasizing the unstoppable and inevitable historical trend toward China's complete reunification.
