2025 World Table Tennis Championships Kick Off in Doha with Chinese Team's Strong Performance

The World Table Tennis Championships for 2025 have commenced in Doha, Qatar, running from now until May 25. The Chinese national team has brought its strongest lineup to the event, with many players advancing easily through the initial rounds. This tournament is particularly important as it serves as a key indicator for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, especially since doubles events will replace team competitions at the Olympics.

China's team consists of 13 players, with seven competing in two different events, reflecting their strategic focus on doubles. The competition features various events including men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Matches in the singles format are played best-of-seven, while doubles matches follow a best-of-five format.

In the mixed doubles category, the pair of Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha easily defeated the American duo of Jishan Liang and Amy Wang, winning in straight sets (11-8, 11-1, 11-9) to progress to the round of 32. On the women’s singles side, Wang Manyu advanced as well, securing a 4-1 victory over Natalia Bajor from Poland, moving into the round of 64.

During the tournament's opening day, women's world No.1 Sun Yingsha delivered a strong performance, finishing her match against Ukraine's Veronika Matiunina in just 26 minutes with a score of 11-5, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7. Similarly, men's world No.2 Wang Chuqin made an impactful entry into the singles competition, defeating US player Nandan Naresh convincingly in straight games (11-6, 11-4, 11-2, 11-4). The top-seeded mixed doubles team of Lin Shidong and Kuai Man triumphed over the England-Wales pair, winning 3-0. At just 20 and 21 years old, Lin and Kuai have demonstrated strong synergy through their success in international competitions and seek to improve on their previous bronze medal finish at the last World Championships.

Lin Gaoyuan partnered with Lin Shidong, marking their second World Championships together, while Liang Jingkun and Huang Youzheng formed a new partnership. This championship also signifies the inaugural major event since Wang Liqin succeeded Liu Guoliang as president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association in April. Wang emphasized the significance of the Doha World Championships as the first big event of the new Olympic cycle and expressed hopes for a strong performance in this tournament, marking an important aspect of their competitive plans for the year. Sun Yingsha, having claimed the women's singles title at the previous championship in Durban, stated her objective is to perform her best and enjoy every match, regardless of the outcomes.
