Visa-Free Policies Fuel Tourism Boom and Reshape Global Travel Landscape

China has significantly relaxed its visa policies, allowing citizens from numerous countries to enter without a visa. This shift marks a substantial change from previous regulations.

The government's expansion of visa-free entry is aimed at stimulating tourism, boosting the economy, and enhancing its international influence. In 2024, over 20 million foreign visitors entered China without a visa, representing a significant portion of the total and a substantial increase from the previous year.

Travel companies and tour guides are preparing for a larger influx of tourists, particularly with the upcoming summer holidays. The demand for English-speaking tour guides is growing, reflecting the increased interest in visiting China.

Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, China reopened its borders to tourists in early 2023. The number of visitors in that year was still less than pre-pandemic levels. The country has since expanded visa-free entry to include citizens from various European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries.

The visa-free policy has simplified travel for many, eliminating the need for lengthy and costly visa application processes. Travel agencies are experiencing a surge in business, with bookings significantly increasing compared to pre-pandemic levels.

While the U.S. remains a major source market, the proportion of European travelers has increased considerably. The visa-free policy has had a positive impact on the tourism industry.

In addition to the 30-day visa-free entry, citizens from a separate group of countries can enter China for up to 10 days if they are transiting to a different country. This transit policy is available at a limited number of ports of entry.
