Following a disappointing performance in the spring federal election, the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) is taking steps to assess its campaign strategies. Emilie Taman, an Ottawa lawyer and former NDP candidate, has been selected to facilitate this review, which comes after the party suffered a loss of 17 seats, leaving it with only seven in the House of Commons—its worst result in 60 years. The loss led to the resignation of leader Jagmeet Singh, who announced he would step down from the party's leadership on election night.
Taman emphasizes the urgency of her task but is also determined to conduct a thorough evaluation before presenting her findings at the year's end. She plans to explore the theme of party renewal, acknowledging that rebuilding will not happen overnight. In an interview, Taman indicated her role is not solely to devise a renewal strategy but to gather a comprehensive range of opinions and feedback as the party looks toward electing a new leader.
As the NDP deliberates on potential leadership candidates, Taman aims to collate insights that could inform their visions for the party's future. Two notable figures have expressed interest in the review process, including former NDP MP Nathan Cullen, who remarked on the poor results of the recent campaign and the need for fundamental reconstruction within the party. He noted that the NDP must not only prepare for the next election but also undertake essential rebuilding efforts.
Avi Lewis also commented on the need for renewal, stressing the importance of reconnecting with the party's base and its political roots. He articulated a belief that the NDP needs to deeply re-engage its members to foster genuine support. Both Cullen and Lewis, who are contemplating leadership bids, highlighted the significance of Taman's review in shaping the discussions and strategies of prospective candidates.
Taman plans to travel across the country to gather insights from local campaign teams, volunteers, and former candidates while also allowing rank-and-file members to contribute their views through an online survey. Interim leader Don Davies has emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive examination of the party's current situation, aiming to devise a successful progressive agenda for the future. The findings from this review are expected to be publicly released, with Taman offering her expertise on a voluntary basis.

Every party has its ups and downs. It's good to see the NDP committed to learning from this experience.

After decades in politics, does the NDP still not understand what it takes to win? This seems hopeless.
