Amanda Anisimova Celebrates Grand Slam Semifinal with Family at Wimbledon

Amanda Anisimova achieved a significant milestone by reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal in six years at Wimbledon, where she celebrated with her nephew, Jackson, on the grass of No. 1 Court. In a tense match, she overcame five set points and secured a hard-fought victory against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (9).

Anisimova first made it to the final four at a major event when she was just 17, at the 2019 French Open. Following a break in 2023 to address her mental health issues and feelings of burnout, she has made a strong comeback at 23 years old, currently seeded 13th at Wimbledon. After her notable performance, she is on track to reach the top 10 rankings for the first time, a remarkable turnaround considering she was unable to qualify for the tournament last year.

Reflecting on her journey, Anisimova expressed her gratitude for the extraordinary year she’s had, filled with highs and enjoyable moments. She faced a formidable opponent in Pavlyuchenkova, who presented challenges, especially in the second set where Anisimova initially led 5-2 and faced two match points but couldn’t convert. The match reached a tense tiebreaker, where she fell behind but managed to rally back, ultimately closing the match with a powerful serve that ended in a netted return.

With emotions running high, Anisimova celebrated her victory by falling face-down on the court in joy, later joining Jackson, who had flown in with her family to experience the moment. She expressed her thankfulness for their support, noting how rare such experiences are and how special it was to share this accomplishment with her loved ones.

Anisimova’s celebration feels forced. It’s just tennis, not the Olympics.

How does losing to Pavlyuchenkova count as a solid victory? She was lucky to escape.
