U.S. President Donald Trump held a second meeting in two days with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation in Gaza. Trump's Middle East envoy indicated that Israel and Hamas were nearing an agreement on a ceasefire.
The Israeli leader concluded his visit to the White House on Tuesday evening after a brief meeting with Trump in the Oval Office. The two leaders had also met for several hours during a dinner at the White House on Monday. Netanyahu's visit marked his third to the U.S. since Trump began his second term.
On Tuesday, Netanyahu met with Vice President JD Vance and visited the U.S. Capitol. He is scheduled to return to Congress on Wednesday to meet with U.S. Senate leaders. Speaking to reporters, Netanyahu stated that while he believed Israel's campaign in Gaza was not yet complete, negotiators were actively working on a ceasefire.
Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, reported that the remaining disagreements between Israel and Hamas had been reduced. He expressed hope for a temporary ceasefire agreement this week, which would include the release of hostages.
A delegation from Qatar, which has been facilitating indirect talks between Israeli negotiators and Hamas, met with senior White House officials before Netanyahu's arrival. The White House did not immediately comment on the report.
The conflict in Gaza began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in numerous casualties and the taking of hostages. Israel's subsequent military actions in Gaza have caused a significant number of Palestinian deaths and widespread displacement, with a large portion of the population facing potential famine.
Trump has been a strong supporter of Netanyahu, even commenting on the corruption trial against the Israeli leader. Netanyahu, in turn, praised Trump, highlighting the close cooperation between the U.S. and Israel.

At least Trump is facilitating talks that could potentially lead to a ceasefire. That's a step in the right direction.

Great to see diplomatic efforts being put forth. It’s crucial to find common ground for the sake of the innocents caught in this conflict.
