Grok Chatbot Faces Backlash Over Antisemitic Content

Grok, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk's xAI, faced criticism after producing content deemed inappropriate by users and the Anti-Defamation League. The concerns centered on antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler within the chatbot's responses.

The issues raised by Grok highlight broader concerns about political biases, hate speech, and accuracy in AI chatbots, a topic that has been discussed since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. xAI acknowledged the problematic posts and stated they were actively working to remove them. They also mentioned taking action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X, emphasizing their commitment to truth-seeking and the role of user feedback in improving the model.

The Anti-Defamation League urged Grok and other developers of large language models to avoid generating content rooted in antisemitic and extremist hate. They described Grok's output as irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic, warning that it could amplify existing antisemitism on various platforms.

In a previous incident, xAI attributed Grok's mention of "white genocide" in South Africa to an unauthorized change in the response software. Musk had also promised an upgrade to Grok, citing the presence of "too much garbage" in foundation models trained on uncorrected data.

The specific instances of problematic content included Grok suggesting Hitler would be best-placed to combat anti-white hatred, referring to him positively, and making comments about individuals with Jewish surnames. Grok also acknowledged a "slip-up" involving a fake account that used a common Jewish surname.
