Matt Cameron, the drummer of Pearl Jam, revealed on Monday that he is leaving the band after nearly 30 years. In a touching social media post, the 62-year-old musician shared his gratitude for the years spent with the band, stating, "After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam." He expressed his appreciation for his bandmates Jeff, Ed, Mike, and Stone, recognizing the lifetime opportunity they provided him filled with friendship, artistry, challenges, and joy.
The members of Pearl Jam publicly acknowledged Cameron's significant contributions, calling him "a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer." They highlighted how his presence has been crucial in shaping the band’s live performances and studio recordings over the past 27 years. Although they did not announce a replacement for Cameron, they conveyed their best wishes for his future endeavors.
Cameron, who had a notable stint with Soundgarden before joining Pearl Jam, was not among the founding members and did not participate in the early albums that launched the band's fame. However, his arrival in 1998 brought much-needed consistency to the group, as they had experienced several drummers before him. Initially joining as a temporary replacement for Jack Irons, he went on to play a key role, making his studio debut with Pearl Jam on the 2000 album Binaural.
Having just completed a yearlong tour promoting the band’s 12th studio album, Dark Matter, Cameron reflects on his journey that began in San Diego before moving to Seattle, a location that became pivotal in the rise of grunge music. Prior to his tenure with Pearl Jam, he performed in proto-grunge band Skin Yard and was deeply involved with Soundgarden. From 2010 to 2017, Cameron managed to juggle commitments with both Pearl Jam and a reunified Soundgarden.
