On July 8, it was announced that 101 Indian students, half of whom are women, have been awarded the prestigious Erasmus+ scholarships for a two-year master's program in Europe, set to commence in the 2025 academic year. This achievement underscores India's status as the largest recipient of these scholarships, highlighting the robust and evolving educational partnership between India and the European Union.
The Erasmus+ program allows students to learn in at least two universities across Europe, culminating in a joint, double, or multiple degrees. The scholarships cover essential expenses such as tuition, travel, and living costs, presenting students with a remarkable chance to advance their academic and professional journeys.
This year's scholarship recipients reflect a continued commitment to Indian participation in studies aligned with shared EU-India interests, including sustainability, innovation, and inclusive development. Students from 20 different states in India will delve into various subjects ranging from sustainable urban development and artificial intelligence to migration policy and intellectual property law.
EU Ambassador to India, Herve Delphin, congratulated the students, emphasizing that the Erasmus+ program offers not just financial support but also a pathway to personal growth and various opportunities in Europe. He pointed out that over 90,000 Indian students currently study in Europe, a testament to the continent's appeal due to its educational quality and diverse cultural experiences. The ambassador expressed confidence that these scholars would enhance bilateral ties and promote positive change as they share their experiences between EU and Indian contexts.
Over the upcoming two years, these Indian scholars will have the chance to study in more than 19 European nations, including France, Spain, Belgium, and Germany, among others. Some may also extend their academic pursuits to partner universities in non-European countries. Since the launch of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship in 2004, India has emerged as the leading beneficiary, with over 2,200 students receiving these scholarships, indicating the program’s significant role in fostering international educational opportunities.
With over six decades of diplomatic relations, India and the EU continue to prioritize education and youth mobility as crucial elements of their strategic partnership. The growth in educational exchanges and people-to-people connections highlights a mutual commitment to collaboration. Erasmus+ serves as a vital vehicle for academic mobility, cultural interactions, and global networking, aiming for deeper cooperation in research and education aligned with sustainable development goals.
