In 2024, Singapore saw a total of 26,328 registered marriages. This represents a 7.0 percent decrease compared to the 28,310 marriages recorded in the previous year, according to data released by the Singapore Department of Statistics.
The average number of marriages per year between 2020 and 2024 was 27,001. This figure is slightly lower than the average of 27,389 recorded between 2015 and 2019.
Marriage rates have decreased for both men and women over the past ten years. In 2024, the marriage rate for unmarried males aged 15 to 49 was 42.0 per 1,000, down from 44.4 in 2014. For unmarried females in the same age group, the rate decreased to 40.1 per 1,000, compared to 40.8 a decade earlier.
The median ages at which people are getting married for the first time continue to increase. In 2024, the median age for grooms was 31.1 years, up from 30.2 years in 2014. The median age for brides rose to 29.6 years, compared to 28.2 years a decade prior. This indicates a continuing trend of people marrying later in life.
The number of divorces and annulments increased in 2024. There were 7,382 cases, representing a 3.7 percent increase from the 7,118 cases recorded in 2023.

It's important to remember that divorce isn't always a negative thing. Sometimes it's the right decision for personal well-being.

This is disheartening news for Singapore. Fewer marriages mean a shrinking population and a potential economic decline.
