Aid Crisis in Gaza, Political Protests, and Arrests

A Palestinian family in Gaza discovered mold, worms, and weevils in the flour they received as humanitarian aid. Despite the poor condition, they are compelled to sift through it in an attempt to make it usable. This desperate measure is a result of Israel's restrictions on aid, which have left the nearly two million residents of the enclave facing the threat of famine.

Syria unveiled a new coat of arms on July 3rd during an official ceremony in Damascus. The government stated that the new emblem "reflects Syria’s new historical phase." This announcement followed transitions within the Assad regime and the beginning of a new political phase under President Ahmed al Sharaa. The adoption of the new emblem will be followed by the replacement of national ID cards and passports. Celebrations marking the launch of the country’s new identity were held in major city squares.

An 83-year-old retired priest was arrested for protesting the UK's recent ban on the pro-Palestinian organization Palestine Action. Reverend Sue Parfitt was taken into custody shortly after the group was officially banned by the government. She was arrested for holding a sign that read, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” She was one of many arrested on Saturday for protesting the group's proscription.

Johnnie Moore, head of the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, denied any wrongdoing. However, leaked footage and documents suggest that the GHF and its partners were involved in deadly aid-site attacks that have resulted in the deaths of over 600 Palestinians, according to the UN.

UK Baroness Jennifer Jones criticized the UK’s decision to label Palestine Action a terrorist group, calling it “gesture politics.” She argued that the group’s actions, such as vandalizing weapons factories, do not meet terrorism thresholds. Supporters of the group and civil rights advocates claim the decision criminalizes dissent and peaceful protest in the UK.

In Nairobi, Kenya, at least 11 people were killed and dozens injured during anti-government protests on July 7th. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and live fire to disperse the protesters. The demonstrations coincided with the 35th anniversary of the 'Saba Saba' uprising, a pro-democracy movement.

The conditions in Gaza are appalling. This is a direct result of the blockade. Unacceptable!

Good for Reverend Parfitt! Standing up for what is right, even at risk to herself.

This makes me sick. Food is being weaponized, this is a war crime.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. How can people be reduced to eating infested flour? Israel's aid restrictions are inhumane.
