The Met Office has indicated that the UK is on course for its third heatwave of 2025, forecasting a period of hot weather where temperatures could surpass 30 degrees Celsius for more than a week. Last Tuesday, July 1, marked the hottest day of the year so far, with a peak temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius recorded at St James's Park in central London. Following some thunderstorms that affected areas such as Norfolk, Kent, Surrey, and Sussex last weekend, a yellow weather warning was in effect due to heavy showers. However, the outlook suggests that by Wednesday, July 9, the weather will clear up, and temperatures across the UK could rise to between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures are expected to steadily increase throughout the week, potentially reaching the low to mid-30s, even making nights uncomfortable due to the lingering warmth. Senior meteorologist Marco Petagna from the Met Office mentioned that while temperatures might hit the necessary range on Wednesday, an official declaration of a heatwave requires three consecutive days at those levels, indicating a likely confirmation around Friday. By the weekend, temperatures could climb to around 31 degrees Celsius in regions such as London and Kent, with most of the southeast experiencing highs close to 30 degrees. The following Monday is anticipated to be sweltering as well, particularly along the south coast of England, and further heating is expected into Tuesday as temperatures could reach 31 to 32 degrees across various areas.
The heat is projected to spread northward by mid-July, potentially affecting cities like Manchester and York. Notably, while southern regions could see temperatures peaking at 34 degrees, the UK is predicted to avoid the extreme heat characteristic of the Mediterranean, which has seen temperatures soar into the mid-40s. Petagna noted some uncertainty around the duration and intensity of the heatwave, with various weather models indicating differing durations for the hot spell. Nevertheless, the Met Office's forecast suggests that the southern UK will retain hot conditions into the following weekend, with ongoing high pollen and UV levels.
