On Monday, a volcano in eastern Indonesia experienced a significant eruption. The event resulted in a massive ash column, reaching an estimated 18 kilometers into the atmosphere. This eruption occurred just a few weeks after a previous event that disrupted air travel to and from Bali.
The volcano, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, is a twin-peaked mountain located on the island of Flores, a popular tourist destination. The eruption began at 11:05 am local time, according to the volcanology agency.
The agency reported that the eruption was accompanied by loud thuds. They also issued a warning regarding the potential for hazardous lahar floods. These floods, which consist of volcanic debris and mud, could occur if heavy rainfall follows the eruption, posing a risk to communities situated near rivers.
As of the initial reports, there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties resulting from the eruption.
