Authorities announced the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind the shooting of Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay. The arrest occurred on Saturday, almost a month after the attack.
The suspect, identified as Elder José Arteaga Hernández, also known as "Chipi" or "Costeño," was apprehended in a Bogota neighborhood. National Police Director Maj. Gen. Carlos Fernando Triana confirmed the arrest to reporters. Arteaga and other suspects were previously linked to the location where Uribe was shot on June 7th. Three other individuals have been arrested for their involvement in the crime's logistics and execution.
Arteaga faces charges including attempted aggravated homicide, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and using minors to commit crimes. Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest on Friday. It was not immediately known if Arteaga had legal representation. Authorities indicated he would appear in court over the weekend.
General Triana stated that Arteaga had a lengthy criminal history, spanning over two decades, and involved in various crimes in Bogota. Uribe was delivering a political speech when he was attacked. The senator was shot multiple times and underwent surgery. He remains in intensive care. Two other individuals were also injured in the attack.
The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Uribe had announced his intention to run for president in the 2026 election and was a vocal critic of President Gustavo Petro. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, given Colombia's history of political violence.

Let’s not overlook the danger political figures face. This arrest shows we can’t let violence win.

Arresting one person means nothing if the political elite keeps playing their dangerous games.

How can we trust the justice system when those in power often escape unscathed? It’s all for show!

I’m relieved the authorities acted quickly. We need to stand firm against threats to our democracy.
