An officer from the Alvarado Police Department sustained injuries during a shooting encounter near the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Alvarado, Texas, on July 4th. The shooting transpired shortly before 11 p.m. when police responded to a report of a suspicious individual carrying a weapon on Sunflower Lane, outside the Prairieland Detention Facility.
Upon their arrival, officers noticed a person appearing to be armed, and as one officer attempted to engage, a group of unknown assailants opened fire, resulting in the officer being struck in the neck. Fortunately, the officer was transported to a hospital in Fort Worth, underwent treatment, and was eventually discharged.
Local authorities apprehended multiple suspects, aided by agencies such as the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, after the suspects attempted to escape. Although the identities of those in custody have not yet been disclosed, reports indicate that at least eight individuals were arrested, some of whom were wearing body armor. According to a federal law enforcement source, a group of over a dozen masked individuals vandalized vehicles and security cameras near the detention facility and set off fireworks, allegedly to draw police attention.
The FBI has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, while the Justice Department stated it is vigilantly observing the attacks on DHS facilities in Texas and Oregon. The Deputy Attorney General emphasized their zero tolerance for assaults against federal officers and properties, signifying strong governmental disapproval of such acts. Alvarado police are urging anyone with information about the incident to reach out to them.
