Liverpool's captain, Virgil van Dijk, along with several other players, traveled to Portugal on Saturday to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. The two men tragically lost their lives in a car accident.
The fatal crash occurred early Thursday morning in Spain's Zamora province. The Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off the road, resulting in the deaths of both brothers.
Diogo Jota, aged 28, had recently experienced a period of great joy. He had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, just eleven days prior to the accident. The couple had three young children.
The funeral service took place at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, located in the brothers' hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. Church bells rang out as friends and family mourned, following the coffins into the church.
The unexpected death of Jota has deeply affected the football community. The loss of a player at the peak of his career is a rare and devastating event.
Van Dijk was seen carrying a floral tribute shaped like a red shirt, adorned with Jota's number 20 in white flowers. Teammate Andy Robertson, who had attended Jota's wedding, carried a similar tribute of roses for Silva, also a professional footballer, with the number 30.
