Hip-hop artist LL Cool J withdrew from a Fourth of July festival in Philadelphia, expressing support for the city's striking municipal workers. He stated that he couldn't perform and accept payment while workers were fighting for a living wage. The announcement came the day before the Wawa Welcome America Festival, where he was scheduled to headline.
LL Cool J expressed hope for a resolution and indicated his willingness to be in Philadelphia if an agreement was reached. The strike, initiated by District Council 33 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, began after negotiations for a higher-paying contract failed. The union represents workers providing essential services such as 911 dispatch and sanitation.
The union acknowledged LL Cool J's support, praising his use of influence to champion workers' rights. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker also acknowledged his decision, stating her respect and welcoming him back to the city.
Singer Jazmine Sullivan also withdrew from the festival in solidarity with the union, citing her commitment to supporting fair wages for the working class. Mayor Parker also respected Sullivan's decision, expressing the city's affection for her.
The union president, Greg Boulware, expressed gratitude for Sullivan's support. The Wawa Welcome America Festival is a major Fourth of July event. Following legal action, a judge ordered some union members to return to work. The union advised affected members to comply to avoid legal repercussions.

I was so looking forward to the concert. Now I have to miss out because of a political statement. Thanks, a lot.

I admire them! More celebrities should do the same.

If they really wanted to support the workers, they could pay the workers themselves. This is just about them.

These artists are out of touch and don't understand the complex realities of a city budget. Perform and advocate, you can do both!

They're showing what real allyship looks like. Supporting the working class is ALWAYS the right choice.
