China Warns Philippines Against US Military Cooperation

During a press conference in Beijing, Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang of the Ministry of National Defense voiced strong warnings to the Philippines regarding its collaboration with the United States, particularly in light of US missile deployments in the region. Zhang's remarks were a direct response to the Philippine military's announcement about the deployment of an anti-ship missile launcher, which they claimed would help deter coercion or invasion. He emphasized that by introducing such tactical weapons, the Philippines is escalating tensions and aligning itself closely with US interests.

Zhang metaphorically referred to the Philippines’ actions as "inviting the wolf into your own house," implying that this military partnership could have detrimental effects on the Philippines’ own security. He criticized this move for undermining regional peace and stability and insisted that it violates the shared interests of neighboring countries. Furthermore, he urged the Philippines to heed historical lessons and avoid repeating past errors that could lead to increased conflict.

In addition to discussing missile systems, Zhang took issue with a new initiative by the Philippine government that seeks to encourage fishing operations near the Nansha Islands. He asserted that China possesses undeniable sovereignty over these islands and their adjacent waters and viewed Philippine fishing activities as provocations aimed at infringing on Chinese sovereignty. Zhang reiterated China's commitment to safeguarding its maritime rights and maintaining administrative control over the disputed waters.
